Case 2: Mumbai Dating App Scam: How Young Men Were Allegedly Trapped Through Online Matches
Over the last few years, dating-app related frauds have emerged as a growing concern in several Indian cities. One such operation came under scrutiny in Mumbai, where multiple victims reported being lured into expensive hospitality venues through online dating platforms.
According to complaints received by authorities, women connected with men through popular dating applications such as Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and OkCupid. After establishing initial contact, they would suggest meeting at specific clubs and lounges.
Victims alleged that shortly after arriving at the venue, the women would begin ordering premium food, expensive liquor, and specialty items. In many cases, bills reportedly escalated rapidly, ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹85,000 within a short period. Several complainants claimed they were unaware of the pricing structure and relied on their dates to place the orders.
Many victims further alleged that the women would abruptly leave the venue citing emergencies or personal reasons, leaving the entire bill to be settled by the men. Some individuals reported being subjected to intimidation or pressure when they questioned the charges.
Despite repeated complaints to cybercrime authorities and local police, the alleged operation reportedly continued for a considerable period. Several victims also claimed that the women involved threatened legal action or harassment complaints when confronted.
In October 2024, Mumbai Police reportedly arrested Ankur Meena, who was alleged to be one of the key figures behind the operation. During the course of the investigation, authorities examined the possible involvement of multiple establishments across Mumbai, Pune, and Thane. Reports indicated that several individuals connected to the network were subsequently taken into custody.
The case highlighted the growing sophistication of organized dating-app scams and the importance of public awareness while meeting individuals through online platforms.
